For the First Annual Gala Event, The Del McCoury Band performed at the Strand Theatre in York, PA on October 13th to benefit the Kittelson Charitable Foundation and in particular the students whose continuing education depends on the financial support they receive. Del and his band performed for more than two hours. It was a homecoming of sorts for Del since he grew up in York County and so he had many family members in attendance too. At one point in the concert his two brothers joined him and the other band members on the stage to sing and play; it was a special treat for the audience on a special night.
The Del McCoury Bandis the most awarded bluegrass band of all time. In September 2011, just days from Bill Monroe’s100th birthday, Del was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame at the “The Mother of Country Music” The RymanAuditorium. The band has won a total of 31 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, including Entertainer Of The Year nine times. In 2006, The Del McCoury Band won the Grammy award for Best Bluegrass Album Of The Year for the CD titled “The Company We Keep”. The Del McCoury Band continues to cross genres and in 2011 released a crossover CD with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band titled “American Legacies”. In 2012, The Del McCoury Band will release “Old Memories, The Songs of Bill Monroe” featuring some of his favorites songs performed during his tenure with Bill Monroe and Bluegrass Boys.
